Event Description: The 2014 Upwind Downwind Conference kicks off with a free community event- a lecture on environmental conservation and sustainable design. Sunday February 23rd, 2014 at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Pavilion. Our featured speaker is Dr. Stephen Kellert, author of Birthright: People and Nature in the Modern World (2013); Companions in Wonder: Children and Adults Exploring Nature Together (2012); Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science, and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life (2008). The Tweedy Ordway Professor Emeritus of Social Ecology and Senior Research Scholar at the Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies explores understanding the connection between nature and humanity with a particular interest in environmental conservation and sustainable design and development. The conference will take place on Monday February 24th, 2014 from 8am to 5pm at the Sheraton hotel in downtown Hamilton. The 2014 theme of this one day conference will explore how the built environment and transportation can improve air quality, address climate change and improve health. Topics include public health and the built environment, tactical urbanism, cost and benefits of air quality management, transportation and complete streets, planning with climate change and sustainability. We have two plenary streams in the afternoon - one focussed on air quality management and land use planning, the second is focussed on transportation and includes a workshop component.
